Trail Monitors are an awesome tool!
If you don't already have one your really missing out.
I have been using them for four years now and won't go without them. It allows me to monitor the deer on my property as well as keep an eye on predators and tresspassers.
Cameras are not hard to set up. Most take 6 D-Cell batteries. they have built in memory so you don't have to get anymore equipment. The Moultrie cameras do take an SD card avaiable at a photo shop for $10-$15. Keeping 2 SD cards available will let you change out the cards without having to remove the Camera from the bush. Spring and Summer monitoring can be really fun because you get to watch specific deer grow up on the property.
Tips to think about when purchasing you new camera.
-
Your budget. First decide how much you want to spend before looking into purchasing. Camera's very from $50-$399.99. You get your monies worth the more you spend BUT if you spend $100 you may regret it in a hurry.
-
My first camera was a Steath camera. Great photos but I had to run to town for a 35mm developement. Expensive after a long time.
-
Battery Power. Flash Cameras have to be ready for that shot soo.. it winds up the flash and prepares for the first things that crosses the path. In past experience I went through a lot of batteries with my flash cameras.
-
Infrared. Some deer do get spooked when the flash goes off but I haven't seen a deer scared of them yet. Infrared to me is better for batteries. What happens is the little 2 watt infrared lights turn on for split second and then the camera does its job by taking a picture. The down fall for infrared is that it only gives you black and white night time photos.
If your looking for an Awesome, Money saving camera that gives great quality that you can zoom up on to get a good view or High res pictures that you can print at picture quality without having to be replacing the 35mm film or the batteries? I recommend the Moultrie I-40. This Infrared 4 mega pixel camera has more features than I need. It gives you Time, Date, Moon Phase, Temp and even power supply left.. Multi Shot feature with movie shot up to 15 seconds long. I have 4 of these cameras now and won't give them up.
